First National Guard Unit
“The first National Guard unit was formed here in 1882 by John Borradaile, who was elected captain. About the same time, companies were formed in Las Vegas and Santa Fe, and these three organizations were made into a regiment with Perfecto Armijo, sheriff of Bernalillo County, as colonel. The local company once was called out to chase rustlers, and at another time to attend the hanging of a murderer. Bernard Ruppe was a member of the first company.”[i]
